Saint Melania the Great
Pope Shenouda III speaks about Saint Melania the Elder, a unique example of faith and devotion. She was a wealthy and educated woman, married for a time, but later left worldly life and chose the monastic path with humility and love for God.
1. Her Life and Monastic Vows:
After becoming a nun, she lived a life of dedication and simplicity. She also encouraged her granddaughter, Saint Melania the Younger, to follow the same path of faith and holiness.
2. Her Generosity:
One of her well-known stories tells of her giving many offerings to monks and saints. On one occasion, she brought a bag containing 500 gold coins and gave it to Saint Abba Bemoah to distribute among the monks living in the inner desert.
3. Lesson of Trust in God:
When the saint did not open the bag to check its contents, she was surprised. He gently told her, “If you have given this money to God, then God knows its amount.” Melania was humbled and learned a deep spiritual lesson about trusting God and giving with a pure heart, not for human recognition.
4. Her Spiritual Guidance:
Later, she became a spiritual guide even to senior monks, gaining profound wisdom and becoming an example of humility, faith, and divine love.
Spiritual Essence:
Saint Melania the Elder teaches us that monasticism is not only leaving the world but leaving the self. True giving is that which is offered to God with full trust, seeking no earthly glory, but only love for Him.
