Saint John the Dwarf

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the life of Saint John the Dwarf, a young monk who was an amazing example of humility and spiritual strength despite his young age. The Pope explains that this saint, though young in years, was great in spirit — so much so that the Fathers said, “the whole Scetis was hanging on his finger,” meaning his spiritual influence was immense.
🌿 True Humility:
The Pope tells how Saint John the Dwarf was once answering questions from young monks when an elder, thinking he was showing off, rebuked him harshly, comparing him to a woman adorning herself to gain admirers. But with deep humility, Saint John replied, “Yes, Father, I am exactly like that — and even worse if you knew what is inside me.” The elder was then ashamed of his words.
🔥 Spiritual Strength Despite Youth:
The Pope points out that though John was young in age, he was mature in spirit — unlike the elder who was old in years but weak in faith. True value lies not in age or appearance, but in one’s inner spiritual depth and unity with God.
💫 Spiritual Dimension:
Saint John the Dwarf shows a perfect example of humility and self-awareness before God. True strength is found in humility, for “God gives grace to the humble.”
💖 Lesson:
Through this saint’s life, Pope Shenouda teaches that real greatness is not in pride or praise, but in a pure heart and humble soul before God and others.
