Saint Arpessima
This lecture, spoken by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III, is about the life of Saint Aripsima during the persecution of Diocletian, explaining how she dedicated herself to chastity and virginity from her youth.
🔹 The Story of Choosing and Fleeing
Aripsima was presented to a governor who wished to marry her and make her queen; she fled with a group of virgins to another land to preserve her chastity and commitment, wanting to remain a bride of Christ.
🔹 Her Steadfastness before Temptation and Threat
Despite attempts to entice and pressure her and her mother to abandon her vow, Aripsima refused to renounce her spiritual covenant, persisting in her firm spiritual stance and refusing marriage and return from her vow.
🔹 Torture and Martyrdom
Aripsima and the group with her suffered persecution and torture because of their faith and refusal to abandon chastity; her life ended in a holy martyrdom, and she and her companions received the crown of virginity and martyrdom.
🔹 The Impact of the Story and Its Spiritual Significance
His Holiness highlights that the determination of the virgins for chastity and their steadfastness in faith under severe pressure show how piety can overcome worldly temptations and fears, becoming a living testimony that inspires believers.
🔹 The Coptic Orthodox Dimension
From the perspective of our Coptic Orthodox faith, the story emphasizes the value of consecration for salvation and personal holiness, and the example the virgins give as witnesses to an open heart toward God and refusal to compromise with sin.
🔹 Practical Message
