Purgatory – Part 1

This lecture explains the position of the Coptic Orthodox faith regarding the doctrine of purgatory as taught in the Catholic Church, and presents the reasons for rejecting this doctrine from a theological and biblical perspective. His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that salvation in the Christian faith is completely based on the atonement and redemption of Christ, and that the blood of Christ alone purifies a person from sins, not suffering after death.
First: Purgatory and the Doctrine of Salvation
The Orthodox teaching confirms that a person cannot atone for his sins by himself, because sin is directed against the infinite God, and therefore humanity needed a complete divine atonement.
This redemption was accomplished through the work of Christ on the cross.
Therefore, the idea that a person is purified after death through sufferings in purgatory contradicts the belief that the sacrifice of Christ is sufficient and complete for salvation.
Second: The Blood of Christ Is the True Purifier
The Church teaching affirms that true purification is accomplished by the blood of Christ, as the Holy Bible states that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from every sin.
Therefore, a person does not need additional suffering after death in order to receive forgiveness, because the divine act of redemption is able to grant complete salvation.
Third: Purgatory Contradicts the Justice of God
The lecture explains that the idea of purgatory assumes that a person pays the price of sin after Christ has already paid its price on the cross.
This means that the price of sin is paid twice, once by Christ and once by the suffering of the person, which does not agree with the concept of perfect divine justice.
Fourth: Church Penalties Are for Healing
The lecture explains that church penalties are not a payment for sin, but spiritual means to reform the person and help him in repentance.
These penalties are connected only with earthly life and end with death, and there is nothing in the Holy Bible that indicates their continuation after death.
Fifth: Divine Forgiveness Completely Erases Sin
Biblical teaching shows that when God forgives sin, He erases it and remembers it no more, as the scriptures confirm.
If the sin has been forgiven and erased, then there is no meaning in punishing a person for it again after death.
Sixth: True Purification Happens in This Life
True purification is not suffering after death, but an inner transformation of the heart that takes place through repentance and returning to God in earthly life.
A person is purified through repentance and the grace of God, not through punishments or suffering after departing from the world.
Spiritual Conclusion
The lecture affirms that the Christian hope is based on the love of God and His complete forgiveness, and that the blood of Christ is the only way for purification and salvation. Therefore, the Orthodox faith rejects the idea of purgatory because it contradicts the sufficiency of the divine redemption and the promises of God for forgiveness to those who repent.
