Pride

The Main Idea
The lecture discusses the danger of pride, as Pope Shenouda III explains that a proud person thinks of himself more than his true measure, exceeding the limits of the grace given to him by God, and esteems himself above what is proper instead of living in sobriety and humility.
Roots of Pride and Its Fall
The teaching shows that pride is not new, but an ancient sin that began with the fall of the first man, and the fall of Satan himself when he wanted to be like God. This idea was also repeated in the Tower of Babel where people sought to glorify themselves, and the result was سقوط and confusion.
Manifestations of Spiritual Pride
Pride appears in desiring high spiritual gifts without worthiness, such as seeking miracles, visions, and tongues, instead of pursuing love which is the better way. Satan may also deceive a person with false visions if his heart inclines to pride.
Pride in Thought and Behavior
Pride also appears in:
- Trusting personal opinion and criticizing others.
- Jumping to spiritual levels without struggle or gradual growth.
- Feeling self-sufficient without need for the Church or intercession of saints.
- Claiming knowledge and understanding without humility.
Scriptural and Teaching Examples
The lecture presents examples such as the fall of Peter the Apostle when he thought of himself above what is proper, and also models of humility like the saints who admitted their ignorance and humbled themselves before God.
The Right Path
The teaching focuses that the correct path is humility, knowing oneself and one’s limits, and walking according to grace, avoiding pride or seeking vain glory.
The Spiritual Message
Pride leads to downfall, while humility is the foundation of stability and spiritual growth. Therefore, a person should live in inner and outer humility, and seek what aligns with God’s will, not what pleases himself.
