Preaching, Part 2
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III continues his teaching about preaching and the preacher, explaining that the true sermon is the one that comes from the heart and is spoken with warmth and simplicity, not memorized or read mechanically. A sermon is not a written text but a life transferred from the preacher’s spirit to the people.
🔹 Features of an effective sermon
-
It should not be memorized or repeated so that it does not lose its effect or bore the listeners.
-
It must express the Church’s doctrine, not the preacher’s personal opinions.
-
It is delivered with a living voice, sincere expressions, and without artificial shouting.
-
It must be based on true biblical and spiritual study without inventing information or attributing it to false sources.
🔹 Mistakes to avoid
-
Long introductions or unnecessary explanations that do not benefit the people.
-
Using the pulpit to settle personal disputes or criticize individuals.
-
Hinting at confessions or revealing personal details that hurt the listeners.
-
Harsh, vulgar, or insulting language, for the preacher serves souls and must not wound them.
-
Preaching with difficult philosophical terms without providing clear practical guidance.
🔹 The spirit and content of preaching
-
Focus on positive points and the beauty of virtue rather than attacking sin violently.
-
Offer practical steps to help people reach virtues such as humility, meekness, and purity of heart.
-
The true preacher knows souls, understands their spiritual battles, and offers realistic ways for holy living.
🔹 The importance of stories
-
Stories are among the most effective and attractive elements for children, adults, and elders alike.
-
They may be collected from Scripture, saints’ lives, history, the desert fathers, or daily life.
-
Bringing something new makes the sermon engaging, provided it does not oppose the true faith.
🔹 Considering time and people’s feelings
-
The sermon should not be long and boring nor short and incomplete.
-
In early morning liturgies for employees, the preacher must consider their schedule.
-
A wise preacher observes the faces of the listeners and senses what suits them.
🔹 Funeral sermons
-
They are an opportunity to explain the Christian hope in resurrection and eternal joy.
-
Avoid words that increase people’s sorrow or cause unnecessary crying.
-
Avoid excessive praise that does not reflect reality.
-
When non-Christians are present, use the phrase “non-Christians” instead of “non-believers.”
🔹 Preaching from the readings
-
If no suitable Gospel verse appears, one may preach from the Synaxarium or other readings.
-
A strong preacher can combine all the readings into one unified spiritual message.
🕯 Spiritual conclusion
Preaching is a sacred ministry whose goal is the salvation and building of souls, not showing off knowledge or imposing personal ideas. The preacher must be simple, practical, and loving, knowing the spiritual path and helping people walk it through clear steps. A word spoken from a pure loving heart enters hearts and transforms them.
