Praise for the great saint, Anba Antonios
In these profound reflections, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the great Saint Anthony, the Father of Monks and a model of purity and spiritual struggle. He describes him as a strong pillar in the Church, living a holy virginal life filled with asceticism, prayer, and humility.
His Holiness recounts how Saint Anthony fought the demons with the power of faith and constant prayer, remaining steadfast in the desert despite trials and hardships, becoming an example for every monk seeking spiritual perfection.
He shows that Anthony’s life was a light guiding generations, a voice of repentance and hope. He prayed with tears, struggled in silence, and taught more through humility than by words.
The Pope explains that the demons trembled before his faithful heart, for it was filled with the power of the Holy Spirit and the peace of Christ.
He calls us to contemplate the simplicity and purity of the saints’ lives, learning from them how to overcome evil through prayer and to live with detachment and humility during our earthly exile.
Finally, His Holiness offers a prayer asking for Saint Anthony’s intercession — that he may remember us in his prayers and help us in our weakness, so that we may walk in his virtues and complete our lives in the way of the Lord with peace.
