Poem: Am I the Mighty One or My Shadow

This poem, written by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III in 1940, is one of his earliest spiritual and reflective works. It is inspired by the biblical story of Samson, the mighty man who fell into weakness, lost his strength and sight, and was enslaved to grind in the mill. The poem presents an inner dialogue between Samson’s past glory and his present fall.
🌿 Main Idea:
The poem expresses a deep struggle between strength and weakness, between former greatness and current defeat. Samson asks himself: “Am I the mighty one or my shadow?” He no longer recognizes the power that once filled him, realizing the loss that sin has caused.
💫 Spiritual Dimension:
Through Samson’s words, the Pope portrays the human soul’s struggle after turning away from God. The light that once filled his eyes is gone, his hair (symbol of divine covenant and strength) is cut, and he feels lost. Yet he still cries out for mercy—longing for God’s forgiveness and restoration.
🔥 Reflection on Repentance:
The poem teaches that a fall does not mean the end. When one recognizes their weakness, that is the beginning of renewal. True strength is restored only through repentance and God’s grace.
💖 Final Message:
“Am I the mighty one or my shadow” is not only Samson’s cry, but the voice of every person who feels distant from God and longs to return. It is a call to repentance and a reminder that all strength comes from divine mercy, not from human pride.
