Nowruz and Martyrdom Day
The lecture highlights that honoring the martyrs is an essential part of the Church’s life, and that the Coptic calendar for commemorating the martyrs was established beginning from the year 284 AD during the most severe era of persecution known as the era of Diocletian.
Spiritual and faith dimension
The martyrs represent the greatest of the saints because they loved God and gave their lives, and their martyrdom is evidence of the depth of love, faith, and hope in the other life.
How the Church prepared the faithful
The Church prepared her children with firm faith and books defending the faith, encouraged asceticism and virginity, and cared for the martyrs’ bodies and their families so they would not remain without support.
Historical examples and testimonies
The lecture presents many examples: Stephen the Deacon as the first of the martyrs, the apostles of Christ, many cities like Esna and Akhmim, groups such as the Theban Legion, and children, women and monks who were martyred with courage.
Effects of persecution on the Church
Persecution did not weaken the Church but strengthened people’s faith, and martyrdom sometimes turned into a longing to meet Christ, resulting in many entering the faith through the martyrs’ testimony and their miracles.
Practical exhortation for believers today
As believers, children of the martyrs, we are called to take on the martyr’s mentality: to love God above all, to train in the virtue of endurance and patience, and to make our lives a continuation of their steadfastness.
