Ministry on the Way

First: The Concept of Ministry on the Way
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about a type of ministry that is not limited to the official framework inside the church, but extends to every place where a person walks. Ministry is not only in meetings, sermons, or Sunday Schools, but there is a passing ministry that comes on the way, in a quick encounter, or a sudden situation.
The Lord Christ Himself did not confine His ministry to specific places, but was doing good in every place: on the road, at the well, in a house visit, or while passing among people.
Second: Biblical Examples of Passing Ministry
- The ministry of the Lord Christ with Zacchaeus, when He called him while passing on the road, and the meeting ended with the salvation of his house.
- His encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well, where He gently attracted her to repentance without hurting her feelings.
- The example of the Good Samaritan whose heart was moved toward the wounded man on the road, and his ministry became an enduring example of practical love.
- The calling of Moses the prophet at the burning bush, a passing encounter in the wilderness that turned into a great prophetic calling.
- The ministry of Philip the Apostle with the Ethiopian eunuch on the road, which ended with his faith and baptism.
All these encounters were not planned as official ministry, but were a response of a heart moved by love and a sensitive conscience.
Third: The Inner Motive for Ministry
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III emphasizes that ministry on the way needs a heart that moves from within, not an official assignment. The Good Samaritan did not wait for a call, and the seraphim did not ignore Isaiah’s cry, but their hearts were moved.
The spiritual person sees in every situation an opportunity:
- Either to offer a practical or spiritual service.
- Or to take a spiritual meditation from everything he sees around him.
Even ordinary things, such as the sight of flowers or birds, can turn into spiritual lessons, as the Lord Christ did when He spoke about the lilies of the field and the birds of heaven.
The Spiritual Message
The main message is that ministry is a way of life, not only an official activity.
The believer is called to be a servant wherever he is: in his home, in his work, among his neighbors and friends.
A person’s existence without spiritual fruit is a loss of his calling. But the living heart catches opportunities and turns the road into a field of ministry, meditation, and benefit for others.
Ministry on the way is a test of the sensitivity of the conscience, the warmth of the heart, and the readiness of the person to be an instrument in God’s hand at every moment.
