Meekness – Part 1

The lecture focuses on the virtue of meekness as one of the most important fruits of the Holy Spirit in a believer’s life. His Holiness explains that meekness is not weakness or submission, but an inner strength revealed through calmness, kindness, inner peace, and self-control. Meekness is the way of Christ who said, “Learn from Me, for I am meek and humble of heart,” and it is a mark of the saints and the righteous in their relationship with God and people.
Meekness in the Holy Bible
Meekness is mentioned in many places in Scripture: it is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:23), a blessed virtue in the Beatitudes “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth,” and the adornment of the gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth before God (1 Peter 3:4). The Pope explains that true wisdom is shown in meekness, not in violence or confusion.
Traits of the meek person
The meek person is kind and peaceful, does not quarrel or raise his voice, lives in peace with everyone, does not harm anyone, and seeks nothing for himself. He forgives those who wrong him and avoids conflict and judgment. His voice is gentle, his gaze humble, he does not interfere in others’ affairs, and speaks little but wisely.
He is simple in heart, pure in intention, cheerful in face, kind in speech, and his words are filled with grace.
Meekness in the life of Christ
Christ is the perfect example of meekness, as He dealt gently with the adulterous woman, with fearful Nicodemus, and with repentant Peter — without harshness or condemnation. He rebuked with compassion and led people to repentance without hurting or exposing them. He taught that meekness goes hand in hand with humility and love, and that defending the truth must never involve violence or domination.
The fruit of meekness in soul and society
The meek person is loved by everyone because he carries the spirit of peace and compassion. He does not anger quickly or lose his temper, but keeps his inner peace no matter how hard the circumstances are. He is a peacemaker, a supporter of the weak, an encourager of the faint-hearted, and patient in judgment.
Meekness makes a person resemble Christ and gives his face a peaceful radiance — it is the crown of virtues and the path to holiness.
