Love and Trust

This lecture addresses two essential pillars without which the ministry of a priest cannot succeed: love and trust, as the spiritual and practical foundation of the relationship between the shepherd and his flock.
First: Love as the Foundation of Ministry
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that mutual love between the priest and the people is the cornerstone of any successful pastoral service. The people love their priest when they see him as a compassionate father and a devoted servant who sacrifices his time, health, and effort for their spiritual edification. Love also grows from the priest’s virtues, gentleness, humility, and sincere care for everyone without neglect.
Second: Trust as the Fruit of Love
Trust is born from love, and love is strengthened by trust. The people trust the priest’s teachings, advice, promises, and his faithfulness in keeping secrets, whether personal or family-related. This trust allows them to open their hearts with confidence and entrust their lives to their shepherd.
The Financial Aspect and Its Impact on Trust
His Holiness emphasizes that the love of money destroys trust, and that a priest who is ascetic and pure-handed becomes a source of confidence for the people. Church service must be without price, because spiritual mysteries are neither bought nor sold. When a priest distances himself from seeking money, his needs are provided without asking.
Credibility and Spiritual Conduct
Credibility is a fundamental element in building trust, whether in speech, teaching, or promises. A faithful priest does not spread rumors, exaggerate, or claim knowledge of what he does not know, but speaks with accuracy and honesty. His spiritual conduct, in his personal life and in his dealings with people, reflects the sincerity of his ministry and strengthens trust in him.
