General Message of the Lecture

The lecture revolves around a deep spiritual truth: the most dangerous kind of loss is when a person loses himself by his own will, not because of others or circumstances, but because of his inner choices and spiritual and moral behavior.

First: Inner Loss

  • His Holiness Pope Shenouda III emphasizes that a person cannot be truly harmed unless he harms himself first.
  • Anger, agitation, and inner turmoil make a person an enemy to himself and lead to the loss of health and inner peace.
  • An external problem does not harm a person unless it becomes an internal problem.

Second: Various Forms of Losing Oneself

  • Some people lose their health through sins or wrong practices.
  • Others lose their money, time, future, reputation, or relationships due to reckless behavior.
  • The most dangerous loss is the loss of purity, chastity, and faith, because this touches the essence of the soul.

Third: Freedom and Responsibility

  • God gave man freedom, and therefore man is responsible for his choices.
  • One should not blame society or friends, because inner acceptance is what causes harm.

Fourth: Hope of Restoration

  • No matter what a person loses, it can be restored through repentance and returning to God.
  • Church history is full of examples of saints who lost their lives and then fully restored them.
  • The only thing that cannot be compensated is the loss of eternity.

Spiritual Conclusion

Man is called to preserve himself, to walk wisely, and not to allow sin or negligence to steal his heart or his faith. Gaining God is the greatest gain, and losing Him is the greatest loss.
