Joshua Son of Nun

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III spoke about Joshua son of Nun, the disciple of Moses the Prophet, who succeeded him as the leader of the people of Israel after Moses’ death.
His Holiness explained that Moses was a great man, unmatched in his generation, and Joshua was fearful of filling his place for several reasons:
-
It was difficult to replace such a great prophet as Moses.
-
The people were rebellious and stubborn.
-
There were strong enemies surrounding them.
He emphasized that God chooses the weak to manifest His power in them, as it is written: “God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.”
Joshua was trained by Moses for over forty years in the wilderness. He absorbed from him the spirit of meekness, patience, and faith, and personally witnessed the miracles of God. He learned that true strength is not in the sword, but in the hands lifted up in prayer.
Joshua was faithful and loyal to his teacher. He did not join the people in their sins nor worship the golden calf. Therefore, he was worthy to enter the Promised Land along with Caleb son of Jephunneh.
His Holiness focused on the virtue of discipleship, showing that it is not mere theoretical knowledge, but an absorption of spirit, character, and way of life.
A true disciple learns from the life of his teacher—from his calmness, his behavior, and his way of thinking—just as children learn from their parents and servants from their ministers.
He affirmed that the spiritual life requires a constant spirit of learning, for a wise person remains a disciple all his life, learning from anyone who has a virtue—even from nature itself.
His Holiness concluded with God’s words to Joshua:
“No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and courageous.”
Thus, Joshua became a great leader, a model of faith, loyalty, and true discipleship.
