Inner peace
His Holiness Pope Shenouda mentions that on the commemoration of the birth of the Lord Christ we contemplate many meanings, foremost among them the angels’ phrase: “Peace on earth.”
He points out that peace has three aspects: peace between man and God, peace among people with one another, and peace within the soul.
Peace with God is achieved through repentance, purity, and divine love, because sin separates man from God and prevents peace.
Whoever lives in peace with God becomes automatically able to live in peace with others because his heart is purified and makes him walk in God’s commandments with a good relationship with all.
Peace among people includes peace between individuals and nations, and His Holiness asks that peace prevail in places of conflict such as Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Sudan, and others.
Forgiveness and non-aggression, and positive action and love instead of passivity, are the qualities of peacemakers who are called children of God.
Inner peace means liberation from anxiety, disturbance, and passions, and it urges asceticism and contentment as a way to spiritual tranquility.
The Pope calls everyone to reconcile with God and live with the virtues of love and meekness, and that this year be a blessed year in which peace prevails for all countries.
