I Am Amazed at Those Who Demand a Price for Service!
I am amazed at those who demand a reward for their service.
That price may be money.
Or it may be praise and appreciation.
Or it may be a position within the Church.
If they receive none of these—or if they do not get what they want—they become angry, complain, stop serving, object, and may even say openly: How can I serve in a place where there is no appreciation?!
Yet service is meant to be continual giving, work done in humility and often in secret. Its reward is not here, and its true appreciation is from the Lord alone.
A person is called to serve, to carry the cross, and to feel joy in that cross.
And if he does receive some return for his service, he should flee from it, lest the Lord say to him: “Truly I say to you, you have received your reward.”
