Hearts of Different Kinds, Including Hardness

Hearts of Different Kinds, Including Hardness
General Message of the Lecture
This lecture addresses the nature of human hearts in their relationship with God, explaining that hearts are not all the same. Some hearts are gentle and sensitive, responding quickly to God’s voice, while others are hardened, resisting the divine call despite repeated attempts.
Hearts Sensitive to God
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III points to many hearts that were tender and obedient, responding to God without argument. He gives examples such as Abraham, the apostles, Saul of Tarsus, Nathanael, the Samaritan woman, and the prophet Isaiah, whose obedience flowed from living hearts attentive to God’s voice.
🪨 Hardened Hearts
In contrast, there are hardened hearts that are not moved by prayer, spiritual readings, sermons, or even painful events and divine warnings. This hardness is a result of sin, and in turn produces more sin, trapping the soul in a closed circle of distance from God.
God’s Stance Toward Hardness
His Holiness explains that God’s own heart is far from hardness. He is gentle, long-suffering, and does not desire the death of the sinner but that he should repent and live. Yet God stands firmly against the hard-hearted and the proud, as seen in His rebuke of the scribes and Pharisees who burdened people without mercy.
Causes of Hardness of Heart
The causes of hardness include repeated sin, pride, jealousy, revenge, harsh temperament, wrong counsel, lusts, hatred, and anger. All these factors deaden spiritual sensitivity and silence the voice of conscience.
Healing the Hard Heart
Pope Shenouda III offers spiritual and practical remedies, including:
- True repentance and contemplation of the Cross
- Keeping company with the merciful
- Serving the poor and needy
- Fasting, which softens the heart
- Spiritual reading
- Removing the root causes of hardness
Spiritual Conclusion
A good heart is like soft clay in God’s hands, shaped according to His will, while a hard heart is fit only for dishonor. Therefore, God continually calls us: “Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.”
