He Who Overcomes

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III teaches that the Christian life is a constant spiritual battle. The phrase “He who overcomes” means daily victory over sin, temptation, and weakness through the power of Christ, the true Conqueror.
🔸 1. Victory as the Mark of God’s Children
God’s children are called to victory, not defeat. A person who lives in defeat cannot reflect the image of God, for God is always victorious.
🔸 2. Christ the Perfect Victor
Christ overcame temptation, sin, and death. He leads us in His triumphal procession and grants us strength through His grace, saying, “Be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
🔸 3. True Victory Is Over Oneself
Victory is not over others but over oneself—over anger, temptation, sorrow, and evil. True strength is to conquer inner weakness and respond to evil with good.
🔸 4. Examples of the Victorious Saints
Abraham, Joseph, Daniel, the Three Youths, and St. Athanasius—all conquered through faith, purity, and steadfastness. They are models of holy victory.
🔸 5. The Inner Battle
Sin begins within. A strong soul, firm in prayer and Scripture, remains “a closed garden, a sealed fountain.” The true victor is the one who rules himself.
🔸 6. Tools for Spiritual Victory
Prayer, Scripture, repentance, humility, and self-examination. The Word of God, hidden in the heart, becomes a weapon against sin, as Christ said in the wilderness: “It is written.”
🔸 7. Grace and Struggle Together
Grace does not replace effort; it strengthens it. We must fight with God’s help, as Moses prayed and Joshua fought—the victory belongs to the Lord but requires our cooperation.
🔸 8. Love as the Power of Victory
When God’s love fills the heart, sin cannot enter. Love protects, purifies, and makes the soul strong in holiness and peace.
“He who overcomes, I will grant to sit with Me on My throne.”
