Even Christ Had Opponents

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that Christ’s life on earth was a continual struggle between good and evil. Evil thought it triumphed through the Cross, but Christ was the true victor, offering salvation to the world. As Christ had opponents, so will all who follow God’s path—but true victory lies in spiritual faithfulness and divine love.
🌿 The Eternal Conflict Between Good and Evil
The conflict began with Cain and Abel, continued with Joseph and his brothers, and David and Saul. Evil is always aggressive and deceitful, but good endures and conquers through meekness and faith.
👑 Opposition from Kings and Authorities
King Herod sought to kill Christ as an infant, and Pilate condemned Him out of fear for his position. Though Christ wronged no one, envy and pride drove them to reject Him. Thus, the prophecy was fulfilled: “The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers took counsel together against the Lord and His Anointed.”
😈 Satan’s Resistance
The devil resisted Christ from the wilderness temptation to the Cross, where he mocked: “If You are the Son of God, come down.” Fearing to lose his dominion, Satan fought fiercely—but was defeated by the power of the Cross.
🕎 Opposition from Religious Leaders
The scribes, Pharisees, Sadducees, and priests resisted Christ under the guise of defending the Law. They accused Him of blasphemy, Sabbath-breaking, and deception—though He only did good and healed the suffering.
💬 The Stages of Opposition
Opposition began in thought, then in words, then in public slander, and finally in conspiracy to kill Him. Even His miracles were twisted against Him, as they said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul.”
⚖️ From Letter to Spirit
Christ came to free humanity from the bondage of the Law’s letter and reveal its spirit of love. Yet those attached to formality couldn’t bear this freedom, labeling Him as wrong for breaking human traditions.
🌸 Example of Humility and Love
Despite persecution, Christ did not retaliate but overcame through silence and love—“He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He opened not His mouth.” His life was a fire of suffering, yet that fire was divine love unquenchable.
🌈 Spiritual Lesson
Whoever follows Christ must expect opposition, for the path of truth is always attacked. Yet, as Christ triumphed through meekness and love, so His followers overcome through faith and endurance, trusting that God always delivers good from evil.
