Etiquette of Conversation and Discussion

⬇️ تحميل الفيديو

🕊️ Introduction

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about the qualities of good speech and manners of conversation, explaining that good words are a divine gift meant to build up, not to destroy. The tongue is a tool for blessing if used wisely, but dangerous if left uncontrolled.

🗣️ First: Speaking Less

The Pope stresses that “in the multitude of words there is no lack of sin.”
Those who talk too much cannot weigh every word carefully. Excessive speech wastes time and exhausts the listener. A wise person speaks briefly and only about what is useful.

⏰ Second: Respecting Time and Relevance

Do not give topics more time than they deserve or speak about things you do not understand. One must also consider the other’s time — perhaps they are busy or tired, and words said out of place can weary the soul and ear.

🧠 Third: Think Before You Speak

Wisdom requires studying what to say and ensuring accuracy before speaking. Well-thought-out speech is balanced and received, while careless words reveal ignorance.

💬 Fourth: The Quality of Speech

Do not speak on trivial, harmful, or inappropriate matters. Never gossip or reveal others’ secrets. Speak useful and edifying words that bring peace and comfort to listeners.

🙇 Fifth: Humility in Speech

A good speaker must be humble, not arrogant or domineering. Listen to others, allow them to speak, and do not interrupt or raise your voice. Avoid boasting or self-praise; attribute success to God and to others.

💞 Sixth: Courtesy and Kindness

Speak with politeness and gentleness, avoiding mockery or insult. A soft answer turns away anger, while harsh words stir conflict. Words spoken with love and warmth bring peace and respect.

📚 Seventh: Good Listening

Learn to listen well as much as to speak well. Listen attentively, even if you already know what is said, showing respect to the speaker. A noble heart listens as if hearing for the first time.

🕊️ Eighth: Wisdom in Discussion

When differences arise, seek truth — not victory. Offer comments kindly, perhaps in the form of a question. Begin with praise before correction, for a gentle word opens hearts, but harsh criticism closes them.

🕯️ Ninth: Choosing Words and Timing

Choose pleasant words and the right moment to speak. A word said at the right time is like “an apple of gold in settings of silver.”

✝️ Tenth: The Value of Silence

The Pope concludes:
“It is better to be silent than to speak wrongly.”
Even a fool, when silent, is considered wise. Knowing when to speak and when to remain silent is the essence of wisdom.

💡 Summary

Good speech is brief, useful, humble, kind, and wise.
Those who speak with love and calmness, win hearts — for as the Bible says, “He who wins souls is wise.”
A pure heart produces pure words that bless and build others.
