Education in the Christian Church
This lecture speaks about Church education and its role throughout generations.
The speaker explains that education is not merely human work, but a divine mission continuing since the Old Testament, when God sent prophets and teachers through the Holy Spirit.
He emphasizes that Jesus Christ Himself was the Good Teacher, who went from city to city teaching truth and correcting false doctrines of His time.
After Christ’s Ascension, the teaching ministry continued in the Church through the apostles, patriarchs, and holy teachers who preserved and handed down the true faith by sacred tradition. Education, he says, is not the clergy’s responsibility alone, but also that of every father and mother toward their children, since Christian upbringing at home continues the mission of the Church.
He stresses that true teaching should not rely solely on academic style, but must be simple and spiritual, addressing both heart and mind — just like Christ’s teaching. A word spoken with love and faith penetrates hearts more than intellectual knowledge.
He urges servants and teachers to master the English language to serve church youth in the diaspora, so they can communicate and teach the Orthodox faith in their own language.
Teaching, he adds, should include biblical, theological, and spiritual aspects together, for Christian education is not mere information but life in the Spirit.
He concludes with gratitude and encouragement to all who serve in education, reminding them that every teacher shares in the mission of Christ, the greatest Teacher.
