The Main Idea of the Lecture

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III discusses the problem of some members of the Coptic Orthodox Church being attracted to other sects, especially in certain environments and areas. He examines the reasons for this attraction and ways to address it from a pastoral, educational, and spiritual perspective. He emphasizes that the solution is not limited to criticizing other ideas only, but also includes developing the spiritual and educational service within the Church.

First: The Importance of Sound Teaching

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III points to the role of proper theological teaching, such as studying comparative theology, in clarifying doctrinal differences and responding to new ideas that may influence believers. He also explains that teaching must be continuously renewed to face contemporary ideas and not only the traditional old ones.

Second: The Spiritual Approach to Personal Testimonies

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III warns about the danger of turning personal spiritual testimonies into a form of pride or display. Confession of sins must be done with a spirit of contrition and true repentance, not in a way that presents sins as a matter of pride or a story to be told publicly.

Third: Understanding the Causes of Attraction to Sects

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III stresses the importance of studying the reasons that make some people attracted to non-Orthodox meetings and understanding how to bring them back to the Church through genuine care and deep spiritual guidance.

Fourth: Developing Methods of Service

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III emphasizes the importance of diversifying the means of service, such as:

  • Paying attention to cultural and social activities.
  • Providing diverse cultural libraries.
  • Using audio and visual media.
  • Holding home meetings to serve families.

Fifth: Serving Poor and Informal Areas

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III points to the necessity of caring for informal areas where sects may spread, and suggests ordaining priests to serve these areas even if they do not have fixed churches, so that spiritual service may reach everyone.

Sixth: Understanding the Needs of Youth

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that youth need active participation in meetings and teaching methods based on dialogue, discussion, and group work. He also points to the importance of presenting cultural and scientific topics that interest youth and open the door for discussion and thinking.

The Spiritual Message

The lecture affirms that preserving the Orthodox faith requires deep spiritual service, sound teaching, and genuine care for the human person in all circumstances, with a constant effort to reach every soul and seek it with love and pastoral care.
