Commandments That Are Not for You

In this sermon, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the Holy Bible is filled with divine commandments and teachings for spiritual life, yet not every commandment applies to every person. Some were given to specific groups such as apostles, priests, judges, or kings, and should not be applied universally.

🔹 Discerning the Commandments:
Believers must understand to whom a commandment was spoken, in what context, and whether it applies to them. For example, when St. Paul said, “Woe to me if I do not preach,” this referred to his apostolic mission, not to every Christian. Similarly, Christ’s words “Call no man father on earth” were directed to the apostles, who themselves became fathers and teachers of the world.

🔹 The Danger of Misinterpretation:
Pope Shenouda warns against misusing verses, claiming roles or authority that are not one’s own, which leads to spiritual error. The Bible must be understood in its spirit, not merely in its letter, for “the letter kills.”

🔹 Different Callings and Gifts:
God established different orders in the Church—apostles, prophets, teachers, and shepherds. Not everyone has the same calling; each has a unique gift according to the grace given.

🔹 Spirit Over Letter:
True understanding of Scripture requires humility, discernment, and guidance from the Church, rather than personal or isolated interpretation.

🔹 Conclusion:
Every believer is called to holiness and faith, but not every commandment is personally directed to him. Knowing one’s calling and limits preserves humility and guards against confusion. The Word of God must be received with spiritual understanding and the discernment of the Holy Spirit.
