Christ Came to Pay Our Debts
This lecture explains that the Lord Jesus Christ came into the world to pay all the debts of humanity. These debts are not material, but spiritual debts resulting from sin, disobedience, pride, and the corruption of human nature.
- Sin as an Outstanding Debt
Every human being is indebted because of sin, whether much or little, because the wages of sin is death. Humanity is completely unable to repay this debt, so Christ carried the sins of all people, and all human iniquities—hidden and revealed—were placed upon Him.
- The Cup That Christ Drank
The cup Christ accepted was not merely physical suffering or crucifixion, but the carrying of the filth of the whole world, sins, curses, and the wrath of divine justice. This is what made the cup heavy, even though Christ had authority to lay down His life and take it again.
- Christ Bearing the Curse for Us
According to the Law, everyone who breaks the commandments falls under a curse. Christ carried all these curses and became a curse for us when He was hung on the wood, in order to lift the curse from us and grant us blessing.
- Reconciliation with the Father
Sin has two consequences: the destruction of humanity and the anger of God because His commandments were broken. Christ came to pay the debt on both sides:
- He saved humanity from destruction.
- He reconciled the offended Father through His sacrifice.
- Christ as a Sin Offering and a Burnt Offering
Christ was a sin offering to carry human sins, and a burnt offering to satisfy the heart of God, as the fire of divine justice burned in Him until He was crushed for our transgressions.
- Christ’s Obedience and the Debt of Disobedience
Because humanity disobeyed God, it became indebted to Him in obedience. Christ alone was the obedient Man, as He obeyed unto death, even the death of the cross, and by His obedience He paid the debt of disobedience for all.
- Humility, Repentance, and Love
Christ paid the debt of pride through humility, the debt of lack of repentance by entering the baptism of repentance, and the debt of hatred through perfect love. He also restored to humanity the divine image that was lost through sin.
- A Spiritual Call
During Holy Week, every person is called to remember that Christ carried all his debts without being asked, to ask for forgiveness, and to strive not to sin again, because every new sin is added to what Christ carried for us.
