Childhood Stage and How to Deal with It

The lecture focuses on understanding the nature of the childhood stage from a psychological and spiritual perspective, and how to deal with the child in a correct and constructive way, especially within church service, to ensure healthy growth in faith, behavior, and personality.
Second: The Educational and Spiritual Foundation in Dealing with the Child
- At this stage, the child responds through the senses more than through the mind, therefore teaching methods should rely on images, movement, repetition, and melody, not long explanations.
- The relationship between the servant and the child must be based on love, friendship, and respect, not scolding, violence, or fear.
- Encouragement and praise are essential elements in building a healthy child’s psychology, while harsh rebuke leaves deep negative effects.
Third: Characteristics of the Child in the Childhood Stage
- The child has a very strong memory, making this the best stage for memorization (prayers, hymns, verses, and stories).
- The child imitates everything he sees and hears, therefore the servant or parent is a practical role model before being a teacher by words.
- The child has a wide imagination and should not be accused of lying, but rather embraced and gently guided.
- The child loves stories, especially simple ones, stories of animals, saints, and angels.
Fourth: The Coptic Orthodox Faith Dimension
- Childhood is a stage of receiving, not philosophical teaching; the child receives faith through practice and example before explanation.
- Coptic rituals (candles, icons, incense, hymns) nourish the child’s senses and root faith within him.
- The child must not be frightened by God, punishment, or suffering; rather, God should be presented as loving, generous, and near.
- Doctrine is planted simply and peacefully, and explained later when the mind matures.
Fifth: The Ultimate Goal
Raising a child who loves the Church, trusts God, and grows spiritually and psychologically in an environment full of love and joy, so that his faith remains firm when he grows up.
