Biblical figures – Abraham, father of the fathers and prophets

⬇️ تحميل الفيديو

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks in this lecture about our father Abraham as the father of fathers and prophets, showing the greatness of his character through his relationship with God and his complete obedience, while reminding of his human weakness that did not cancel his holiness.

The meaning of the name and divine calling
His name was first “Abram,” then God changed it to “Abraham,” meaning “father of a multitude,” for he became the father of nations and believers. His spiritual history began when God called him to leave Ur of the Chaldeans to the land that God would show him. He obeyed with full faith, leaving his homeland and comfort to seek purity and worship.

Virtues of Abraham
Abraham was characterized by deep faith and wonderful obedience; he did not ask where he was going, but trusted God’s guidance. He was brave in rescuing Lot, humble in dealing with others, generous to guests, and a faithful husband to Sarah. He lived as a stranger in tents, remembering that his true homeland was in heaven.

Trials of faith and human weakness
Despite his virtues, Abraham faced weakness when he went to Egypt during the famine without asking God, and out of fear denied that Sarah was his wife. Yet God protected and saved him, showing that God’s mercy reaches His children even in their moments of weakness.

Degrees of faith and obedience
Abraham’s faith grew until it reached its peak when he accepted to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice. This complete obedience showed his love for God above all else, and an unshakable faith despite the hardest test.

The story of Lot and the choice of path
Abraham showed humility when he allowed Lot to choose the land first. Lot chose the fertile plains of Sodom, while Abraham remained in the barren land that was blessed. The lesson is that true blessing is not in material wealth but in God’s presence.

The spiritual message from a Coptic Orthodox perspective
Abraham is a model of faith and obedience, a symbol of spiritual exile from the world, and an example of humility and mercy. The message is that holiness does not mean being without fault, but trusting God completely despite human weakness. Whoever walks by faith experiences the grace of God even in failure.
