Biblical Criticism – Does Christ’s Divinity Belong to Him Alone? And How Does He Retain His Human Nature?

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III teaches that Christ’s divinity belongs to Him alone and cannot be inherited or shared.
Christ is God incarnate — fully divine and fully human, united in one person without confusion or separation.
1. Christ’s Divinity Is Unique:
Jesus has no true biological brothers from Mary; the term “brothers” in Scripture often means relatives.
Divinity cannot be inherited; it is not a genetic trait.
The Virgin Mary gave birth to Jesus miraculously — He alone is God in the flesh.
2. The Union of Divinity and Humanity:
Christ is both fully God and fully man.
“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” (John 1:14)
Two complete natures — divine and human — united perfectly in one person, without mixture or division.
3. Retaining Human and Divine Qualities:
In His incarnation, Christ never lost His divine nature, nor ceased to share our human experiences.
He:
hungered, thirsted, and felt pain as a man;
yet remained almighty, holy, and eternal as God.
He shared everything of humanity except sin.
4. Who Suffered and Died?
It was the human nature of Christ that suffered and died, not the divine.
Yet because both natures are united in one person, the act of suffering belongs to the one Christ, not just one part of Him.
“They crucified the Lord of glory.” (1 Corinthians 2:8)
5. Full Divinity, Full Humanity:
Christ is perfect in His divinity and perfect in His humanity.
“In Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.” (Colossians 2:9)
He is not half God and half man, but the complete God and the complete man.
Faith Message:
In Christ, God met humanity face-to-face.
He retained all divine power while embracing all human weakness — to save, restore, and perfect mankind.
