His Holiness Pope Shenouda III presents in this talk the life of the Prophet Samuel from his wondrous childhood, showing the depth of faith in which he was raised, and how God chose him as a prophet in a corrupt era to become the last judge of Israel and the greatest prophet after Moses. The lecture highlights the power of prayer, divine election, and Samuel’s humble obedience, and reveals God’s wisdom in leading the people, anointing kings, and establishing David as a king after God’s heart.

1. The birth of Samuel and the answer to Hannah’s prayer

  • Hannah was barren, but she offered a heartfelt prayer in bitterness of soul.

  • God accepted her tears and vow, and granted her Samuel as a sacred offering to Him.

  • The Pope explains that God is near to sincere prayer coming from a broken heart.

2. Samuel’s upbringing in the house of the Lord

  • He grew up in Shiloh where the Tabernacle was.

  • He lived among corruption—even the sons of Eli were evil—yet he was not influenced by it.

  • Samuel is likened to strong souls that remain pure despite difficult surroundings.

3. God’s call to Samuel as a child

  • God spoke to him while he was still young, and at first he did not recognize the voice.

  • Eli instructed him to say: “Speak, Lord, for Your servant hears.”

  • Samuel carried a difficult divine message announcing judgment on Eli’s house.

4. Samuel as judge and prophet of Israel

  • After the fall of Eli’s house, Samuel became the trusted guardian of the Lord’s dwelling.

  • He was known throughout Israel as a true prophet, and God appeared to him.

  • The people began to request a king instead of God’s rule through the prophets.

5. Anointing Saul, then anointing David

  • Although God knew Saul’s weaknesses, He gave him a full chance and anointed him king.

  • When the people rejected God’s way, God allowed them to experience human kingship.

  • After Saul’s fall, God sent Samuel to anoint David, whom God chose for his heart.

  • David did not rise immediately, but returned humbly to shepherding until God revealed him.

6. The end of Samuel’s service

  • He publicly declared his innocence and honesty before the people.

  • He continued guiding them with God’s word until he departed in peace, known as a great and faithful prophet.

Spiritual conclusion

Samuel’s life is a profound lesson in sincere prayer, quiet obedience, and steadfastness amid corruption.
God chooses the faithful heart rather than outward appearance, and raises the small and despised to greatness.
The grace of God remains with the person who keeps purity of heart.
Samuel is a model of the servant-prophet who seeks only God’s glory.
And the blessing of a holy mother extends into the life of her children through her prayer and vows.
