Attributes of God – Wisdom of God
In this sermon, His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about one of God’s great attributes — the Wisdom of God — showing that God is not only wise but is the very Hypostasis of Wisdom, as the Bible says: “Christ, the power of God and the wisdom of God” (1 Corinthians 1:24).
God’s wisdom in creation
God’s wisdom has been revealed since the beginning of creation. He made everything with precise order and marvelous arrangement: He created plants before animals, and animals before man, and arranged nature in an integrated system that testifies to His greatness — from the movement of the winds to the evaporation of water and the descent of rain, from the human body’s structure to the variety of living creatures and the diversity of natural kinds in the universe.
God’s wisdom in diversity and order
God created diversity among creatures, minds, souls, and appearances so that humans might live in harmony and complement each other. In His wisdom, He made people different in abilities, intellects, and roles to maintain balance in society and to teach humanity cooperation and humility.
God’s wisdom in events and redemption
God arranges events in their perfect timing — as seen in the story of Joseph or in the timing of the births of Christ and John the Baptist. Likewise, He arranged redemption with supreme wisdom: justice and mercy met on the Cross, and salvation was achieved in a way that fulfilled both divine justice and forgiveness.
God’s wisdom in pain and trials
Pain and trials are part of God’s wisdom. They refine the soul, strengthen faith, and help people repent and draw near to God. Suffering reveals physical and spiritual illness and leads one to prayer and humility, just as trials matured David, Job, and many other fathers spiritually.
Faith in God’s wisdom
Believing in God’s wisdom leads to trust and surrender; the believer learns not to complain or argue with God’s will but to submit in peace. Those who contemplate God’s wisdom become more humble and seek the heavenly wisdom which is a gift from above.
The Orthodox spiritual dimension
The wisdom of God reflects His love, justice, and divine order, calling us to walk in His image by seeking divine wisdom in our lives. The believer who lives in the light of God’s wisdom walks in gentleness, humility, and full surrender to the will of God.
