Attributes of Allah – The Good
This sermon contemplates the divine attribute of Goodness — one of the most beautiful qualities of God that reveals His deep love, meekness, and gentleness, extending to humanity, creation, and even sinners.
Main Points
-
The Nature of Divine Goodness
Goodness is a mixture of love, meekness, and gentleness. God possesses all of these. He did not wish to terrify humans with His divinity but descended in compassion so that we could speak with Him as with a loving Father. -
God’s Goodness in Creation and Giving
From His goodness, God did not wish to be alone, so He created humans and all creation, preparing everything beforehand — earth, water, air, plants, animals — so that all might live in comfort and harmony. -
Creation’s Beauty Reflects Divine Goodness
Nature’s beauty — mountains, rivers, birds, flowers — all witness to God’s kindness and generosity. Even small creatures like ants and ravens share in His care. -
God’s Goodness Toward Humanity
He gave people mind, beauty, freedom, and talents—even though they might use them against Him—because He wants them to be at their best. He granted His Holy Spirit to dwell within them and called them His children, brothers, and ambassadors. -
Divine Goodness in Forgiveness
God’s goodness shines in His limitless forgiveness; He seeks humans before they seek Him. He opened the way of repentance, pardon, and redemption, declaring: “I do not desire the death of the sinner but that he may turn and live.” -
God’s Goodness in Patience and Forbearance
He endures sinners, blasphemers, and atheists through the ages, making His sun rise on both the good and the wicked. His kindness exceeds human understanding; His hands remain extended in mercy. -
The Goal of Divine Goodness: Eternal Glory
God promises His children to share in His glory: “Whoever overcomes will sit with Me on My throne.” In the resurrection, He will give them glorified bodies in the likeness of His glory and what “eye has not seen.”
Spiritual Dimension (Coptic Orthodox Perspective)
-
God’s goodness is not weakness but the perfection of divine love that forgives, endures, and gives without limits.
-
Every divine gift is meant for human salvation and participation in heavenly glory.
-
Spiritual call: Let the human heart be good like its Creator — loving, forgiving, and merciful to all creation.
