Attributes of Allah – The Compassionate, the Merciful
This sermon speaks about one of God’s greatest attributes: His compassion and mercy, which reflect His deep love for all creation. Pope Shenouda III explains that Christ’s miracles were not only signs of divine power but acts flowing from His tender and compassionate heart.
1. God’s Compassion in His Works:
God’s tenderness appears in all His actions — in miracles, in His care, and in His response to human suffering. His love was the motive behind every miracle and every act of mercy.
2. God’s Mercy in His Commandments:
God’s commandments are not burdensome; they are filled with love. Along with each commandment, He grants grace and strength through the Holy Spirit, who works in us to walk in His way.
3. God the Good Shepherd:
He cares for His children through the Holy Spirit, guiding and protecting them in every circumstance. Even before we ask, He knows our needs and gives more than we imagine.
4. God’s Compassion Extends to All Creation:
God’s mercy includes all living beings — animals, birds, and even the earth itself. He commands rest for creation and provides for every creature.
5. God’s Mercy in Trials and Discipline:
Sometimes God allows pain but never abandons His children. He “wounds and heals,” meaning He permits trials yet comforts and restores. His discipline is love meant to bring us back to life with Him.
6. God’s Compassion in Salvation:
The ultimate act of mercy is salvation through Christ, who bore the sins of all people. God’s tenderness is not indulgence but redemption.
Spiritual Message:
God is the loving Father who transforms pain into blessing and trials into glory. Even His wounds are “the faithful wounds of love,” leading to deeper communion with Him.
