Attributes of Allah – The All-Powerful
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that God is able to do all things: an eternal power without limits, encompassing creation from nothing and the general resurrection, and miracles of control over nature, healing, exorcism, and the transformation of hearts.
Proofs of divine power
-
Creation from nothing and the resurrection of the dead as the greatest two miracles.
-
Biblical examples: splitting the sea, bringing water from the rock, rescuing the three youths from the fire, preserving Daniel from the lions, the story of Jonah.
-
The miracles of the Lord Christ as proof of His deity and power in creating new matter, healing incurables, and feeding the multitudes.
Granting and withdrawing power
God grants mighty abilities to creatures and humans (the strength of the lion, the human intellect, the gifts of scientists and saints), and He can withhold or take away this power as happened with Samson and the Jonah incident.
The power of the divine word
The word of God is living and active — “Let there be light” — and the word has authority in creation, healing, and spiritual teaching.
Power in love and patience
God’s power appears in His love that preceded creation, in His lavish giving, in His patience toward human sins and provocations, and in His wide forgiveness that erases sin as if it never was.
Practical exhortation for believers
Be strong in His image: strength in faith, in service, in self-control and virtue, and in love and forgiveness, inspired by examples like Paul, Athanasius, and Stephen.
