Attributes of Allah – Simple, Not Compound
The lecture by His Holiness Pope Shenouda III affirms the attribute simplicity of God.
Simplicity here means that God is not composite and is not formed of parts or components that united together.
The idea was clarified with a simple scientific example: a compound like calcium carbonate consists of carbon, oxygen, and calcium that came together and became a new substance.
In contrast, God is not composite of elements that met; there are no prior components that united to form Him.
The core point is that the attribute of simplicity preserves the perfection of divinity and the absence of deficiency or dependence on other elements.
This affirmation aims to safeguard a correct theological understanding of the nature of God away from composite or material conceptions.
From the Coptic Orthodox spiritual perspective, simplicity expresses God’s unity and uniqueness in existence and divine essence.
