Abraham the Father of the Fathers

A Divine Call and a New Beginning
The biography of our father Abraham begins from the moment of God’s call to him, as if his real life was not counted except from when he started walking with the Lord. The call was clear: leave his land and his clan and go to where God leads him. Here the depth of faith appears, for he obeyed without knowing where he was going.
Obedience and Faith
Abraham was distinguished by amazing obedience; he was ready to carry out everything God commanded, whether leaving his homeland or offering his son. He did not ask about details, but his heart was assured that walking behind God is the true safety. This is faith: certainty of things not seen.
Migration from the Place of Sin
Abraham left the pagan environment to live in an atmosphere fitting his relationship with God. A person cannot live a holy life if he remains in a place that keeps him away from the Lord. And if he cannot leave the place, then at least he should leave the wrong way of life.
The Tent and the Altar
Two essential signs accompanied Abraham in his sojourning: the tent which points to him being a stranger on earth, and the altar which declares his constant attachment to God. He lived moving from place to place, not attached to earthly stability, waiting for the city of God.
The Weaknesses of Human Nature
Abraham was not infallible. In the time of famine he feared and went down to Egypt relying on a human arm, and he fell into successive mistakes. But God in His love intervened and saved him, distinguishing between human weakness and betrayal.
God Defends His Children
Despite Abraham’s fall, the Lord did not leave him. He intervened and preserved Sarah, and returned Abraham to the path of righteousness. Thus we learn that God supports His children even in moments of weakness to raise them again.
Humility and Asceticism
When a dispute happened between the herdsmen of Abraham and Lot, Abraham showed the spirit of humility and love, and left his nephew to choose first. He preferred peace over gain, and the spiritual blessing over temporal benefit.
Choosing the Blessing
Lot chose the fertile land, but Abraham chose to leave to God the matter of choosing. Therefore he enjoyed the divine appearances and the promises. Whoever seeks God first receives the true blessing.
