Main Idea

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III discusses the book known as the Gospel of Barnabas, explaining that it is a forged book and should not be considered a Gospel inspired by God. He presents historical, linguistic, and theological evidence to support his position that the book was written during the Middle Ages rather than in the time of Jesus Christ. He points out that the book contains numerous contradictions and historical, geographical, and doctrinal errors, in addition to quotations from Dante’s writings, indicating that it was composed much later. He also refers to the opinions of several Muslim intellectuals and historians, including Abbas Mahmoud Al-Aqqad and Muhammad Shafiq Ghorbal, who criticized the book and questioned its authenticity.

Spiritual Message

Pope Shenouda explains that the Gospel of Barnabas presents a distorted image of the Lord Jesus Christ, attributing to Him words and actions that do not correspond to His familiar image of gentleness and meekness in the four accepted Gospels. It also contains strange ideas and teachings concerning God, angels, creation, salvation, and judgment, which do not agree with Christian teachings or Islamic beliefs. He emphasizes that love for God does not contradict pure human love, and that portraying God as being jealous of the love between parents and their children or between children and their parents presents a false understanding of God. He also criticizes the exaggerations and myths contained in the book, which do not agree with reason or sound spirituality.

Educational Lesson

This lecture teaches us the importance of examining books and sources before accepting or quoting them, and not being misled by titles that give books a religious or sacred status. It emphasizes the need to use historical, linguistic, geographical, and doctrinal evidence when studying any book. It also explains that the absence of references to the Gospel of Barnabas in historical sources and early Islamic writings, together with the late appearance of its known manuscript, raises serious questions about its authenticity and attribution to Barnabas. Pope Shenouda presents numerous examples of contradictions, errors, and exaggerations found in the book, encouraging thoughtful examination rather than accepting claims without investigation.

Practical Application

A person should carefully examine religious books and consult reliable sources before believing any claim. It is also important to distinguish between the Holy Bible and writings attributed to religious figures without reliable historical evidence. Religious discussions should be based on knowledge, research, and evidence rather than inaccurate quotations or misleading information. This lecture encourages us to develop doctrinal and historical awareness that helps us recognize errors and distinguish sound teaching from fabricated ideas.
