A Word on St. Bishoy, St. Shenouda, and St. Karas

Main Idea
The lecture discusses the lives of three great saints of the Coptic Orthodox Church: Saint Anba Bishoy, Saint Anba Shenouda the Archimandrite of the Anchorites, and Saint Anba Karas the Hermit. It explains their spiritual significance and their role in the history of monasticism and the Church.
Saint Anba Bishoy is considered one of the most prominent Fathers of monasticism. He was a disciple of Anba Pambo and became a spiritual father to a large number of monks. He was known for prolonged fasting, spending long hours in prayer, profound humility, and living in solitude away from people.
Spiritual Message
The life of Anba Bishoy shows how God can work through a weak person and make him great in spiritual life. Despite his physically weak constitution, God chose him to become one of the great Fathers of the desert. He was distinguished by his deep love for the Lord Jesus Christ, and his name became associated with the title “Beloved of Our Good Savior.”
As for Saint Anba Shenouda, his spiritual gifts appeared during his childhood, as he devoted himself to prayer, fasting, and giving. He grew in wisdom and spiritual knowledge until he became one of the great leaders of monasticism. He was known for his teaching, preaching, writings, and concern for the Coptic language and his defense of it.
Educational Lesson
The lecture explains the importance of prayer, spiritual struggle, and humility in the lives of the saints. It also highlights their role in preserving the Orthodox faith and teaching the people. Anba Shenouda participated in the Council of Ephesus with Saint Pope Cyril the Great and opposed the teachings of Nestorius concerning the nature of Christ.
Saint Anba Karas the Hermit provides an example of ascetic life and prolonged solitude in the desert. He spent many years away from people, and his life became known for holy visions, some of which were associated with the departure of Saint Anba Shenouda.
Practical Application
The lives of these saints invite us to follow their example in continual prayer, fasting, humility, and steadfastness in the Orthodox faith. Their lives also encourage us to use our gifts in serving God and the Church and not to underestimate our weaknesses, because God’s grace is capable of working within us.
The lecture emphasizes the importance of cherishing the heritage of the Coptic Church and its saints, holding firmly to the teachings received from them, and pursuing a genuine spiritual life expressed through prayer, work, and love.
