The Hope Series – Peace of Mind
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about peace of heart as a fruit of the spiritual life, connected to the peace that God grants to the believing person. He explains that true peace does not depend on external circumstances or the absence of problems, but rather comes from within, from faith in God and trust in His protection and guidance of a person’s life. The Prophet David provides a clear example of a person who lives in peace despite dangers because he looks to God and His work with him, rather than to the strength of his enemies or the difficulty of his circumstances. He also explains that a person who trusts in God’s promises can live in peace because he believes that God is faithful to His promises and does not abandon His children.
Spiritual Message
The teaching emphasizes that peace of heart is connected to trust in God, faith in His constant presence, and His work in a person’s life. It explains that a clear conscience is an essential condition for inner peace, because sin distances a person from peace and causes him to live in fear and turmoil, as seen in the lives of Adam and Cain. It also emphasizes that strong faith helps a person resist fear and doubt, and that weak faith may lead to the loss of peace, as happened to the Apostle Peter when he began to doubt while walking on the water. It also points out that hope in God’s promises and trust in eternal life and God’s help give the believer inner strength that enables him to face trials with steadfastness and peace.
Educational Lesson
This subject teaches us that the spiritual life is not based on theoretical knowledge alone, but on surrendering one’s life to God and trusting in His guidance. The Bible provides examples of people who lived by faith, such as Abraham, who trusted in God’s promises; Moses, who relied on God’s care for His people in the wilderness; and Elisha, who trusted in God’s work. It also explains that spiritual preparedness and a clear conscience help a person face difficult situations without fear, like a student who prepares for an examination and enters it with confidence. It further emphasizes that peace of heart is not limited to feelings, but also includes steadfastness in the faith and refusing to surrender to doubts, while continuing to seek understanding and knowledge.
Practical Application
The teaching invites us to place our lives in God’s hands and trust that He is able to guide them wisely, just as a traveler trusts a skilled driver or a patient trusts an experienced doctor. We should preserve a clear conscience through a life of repentance and faithfulness, and strengthen our faith through prayer and reliance on God’s promises. We should also avoid allowing fear, pessimism, and doubt to control our hearts, but instead confront them with hope and trust in God’s help. The Pope encourages us to be spiritually prepared and not neglect our responsibilities, but rather to combine strong faith with faithful action. Finally, he explains that a person who lives in peace can pass faith and reassurance on to others, becoming a source of encouragement and strength for those around him, so that the spiritual life is passed from heart to heart and from one generation to another.
