This reflection discusses the meaning of the Trisagion prayer, which the Coptic Orthodox Church recites during the Agpeya prayers, the Divine Liturgies, and various liturgical occasions. It explains that this prayer is not merely a collection of words repeated by the tongue, but a hymn of praise to God and a contemplation of His divine attributes, especially holiness. The reflection connects the Trisagion with the praise offered by the angels before God’s throne, as recorded in the Books of Isaiah and Revelation. It emphasizes that repeating the word “Holy” helps the believer recognize the greatness of God and His boundless holiness.

Spiritual Message

The reflection explains that God is holy; therefore, human beings, who were created in the image and likeness of God, should strive to live a life of holiness. It points out that the call to holiness exists in both the Old and New Testaments, and that believers are called to be holy because God is holy. It also explains that holiness is connected with repentance and turning away from sin, because sin is incompatible with the holy nature of God. When a person stands before God in prayer, they should feel humility and contrition because of their sins and ask God to sanctify them and purify their hearts. The reflection emphasizes that the phrase “The Holies are for the holy” in the Divine Liturgy reminds believers of the importance of spiritual preparation and living in holiness.

Educational Lesson

The reflection teaches us that true prayer requires understanding the meanings of the words and responding to them from the heart, rather than merely repeating them quickly. When a believer says, “Holy God,” they should remember God’s holiness and examine their life, thoughts, and deeds. It also explains that God searches the hearts and knows both visible and hidden things; therefore, a person cannot conceal their sins from Him. Furthermore, it explains that the phrase “Holy Mighty” proclaims God’s strength and His ability to deliver His children from hardships and temptations, as well as from the sins that enslave them. Through biblical examples such as Daniel and the Three Youths, the reflection shows that relying on God’s power gives a person hope, courage, and steadfastness in faith.

Practical Application

The reflection invites us to recite the Trisagion with reverence and understanding while contemplating God’s holiness, power, and eternal life. Prayer should also be an opportunity for self-examination, confessing sins, and asking God for mercy and purification. We should strive to live a life of repentance and holiness at home, in the church, and in all our daily interactions. When we face hardships or find it difficult to overcome a particular sin, we should rely on God’s power and ask for His help. The reflection reminds us that holiness is not something that concerns earthly life alone, but is also preparation for eternal life with God; therefore, we should begin our repentance now.
