Abiding in the Lord (Part 1)

Main Idea
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III speaks about standing firm in the Lord, explaining that true spiritual life is founded on a strong personal relationship with God, built on love and faith. He emphasizes that God wants His children to abide in Him, just as a branch abides in the vine and derives its life from it. A person who stands firm in the Lord is not shaken by trials and tribulations, nor does he retreat because of the difficulties he faces in life. The Apostle Paul expresses his certainty in the love of Christ, from which no power can separate the believer.
Spiritual Message
The Pope explains that standing firm in God does not depend solely on outward forms or practices, but on genuine love and a deep personal relationship with God. He gives biblical examples of people who remained steadfast in the Lord despite the corruption of the generations around them, such as Noah, Moses, and Jeremiah. He warns against allowing a person to be influenced by the weaknesses or mistakes of others, or to abandon his first love for God because of his love for the present world. A person who stands firm does not follow the current but holds fast to his faith, even if he finds himself alone, and takes the life of the Lord Jesus Christ and the saints as his example.
Educational Lesson
The Pope compares spiritual life to a fire that needs a constant supply of fuel so that it does not go out, referring to the fire on the altar, which had to remain continually burning. Therefore, maintaining spiritual stability requires perseverance in the means of grace and avoiding negligence in spiritual life. He advises a person to increase his prayers, meditation, and reading of spiritual books when he feels spiritual coldness, and to seek the company of spiritually strong people. He also encourages reading the lives of the saints and benefiting from spiritual readings, hymns, and liturgies that help him grow spiritually.
Practical Application
The Pope calls every person to identify the causes that weaken his spiritual life, avoid them, and hold fast to everything that strengthens his relationship with God. A person should not allow the surrounding atmosphere to control his faith or determine the level of his spiritual life. When he feels weak, he should increase his commitment to prayer, worship, and meditation instead of surrendering to spiritual coldness. He should also choose his relationships and sources of influence wisely and stay away from anything that weakens his spiritual determination. The goal is to remain steadfast in the Lord, to grow continually, and to hold fast to his faith and love for God regardless of changing circumstances.
