The Pool
The lecture discusses the concept of blessing in spiritual and practical life and explains that a blessing is God’s goodness with a person, His grace, His work, and His help in that person’s life. The teaching explains that blessing has existed since the beginning of creation, for God blessed the first human being and granted him the blessing of fruitfulness, dominion, and happiness, and his life was connected with purity and holiness. However, humanity sinned and lost this blessing, and then God’s blessing returned to Noah and his children and continued in the lives of the patriarchs and prophets. A blessing is not merely an abundance of possessions or money, but an abundance of goodness and sufficiency that God grants to a person.
Spiritual Message
The lecture emphasizes that God is the source of blessing and that a person needs God’s grace in every aspect of life, because the blessing of the Lord makes rich, and nothing is lacking with it. It explains the importance of obeying God’s commandments and mentions the blessings associated with obedience, as stated in the Book of Deuteronomy, in contrast with the consequences of disobeying His commandments. The lecture explains that a person can receive blessings through the Church and its holy sacraments, the prayers of priests, the sign of the Cross, prayed-over water, oil, and the laying on of hands, provided that the person receives the blessing with faith. It also points to the importance of parental blessings, respecting the elderly, loving the saints and the fathers, visiting holy places, and holding fast to the Word of God.
Educational Lesson
The lecture teaches us that blessing is not connected only with material things, but also includes spiritual life, family, work, food, and everything a person’s hand reaches. It explains that a little accompanied by God’s blessing may be more beneficial than much that lacks blessing. It also explains the importance of the blessings associated with tithes and firstfruits, and keeping the Lord’s Day, as expressions of obedience and trust in God’s care. The lecture draws attention to the fact that a blessed person can become a blessing to others, as seen in the lives of Abraham, Joseph the Righteous, and the prophet Elijah, whose presence was associated with goodness and blessing for those around them.
Practical Spiritual Application
The lecture invites us to ask God to bless our lives, our families, and our work instead of becoming preoccupied with asking for many material needs. We should be careful to pray, make the sign of the Cross, seek the blessing of the Church, and participate in its holy sacraments with faith. We should also obey God’s commandments, offer tithes and firstfruits faithfully, respect our parents and the elderly, and seek their blessings. The lecture urges us to serve the elderly, the sick, the poor, the hungry, and the thirsty, because serving those in need is serving the Lord Christ Himself. It is also important to bless our food before eating it and to ask for God’s blessing when entering and leaving and in all our works, so that our lives may become a source of goodness and blessing to others.
