Are spirits created? – The wandering of spirits after death – Spirits entering animals and plants – Reincarnation

1. Are Souls Created?

From the Coptic Orthodox perspective, the human soul is created by God and is not eternal, just as everything else that is created. God alone is eternal and uncreated, while human existence began by God’s creative will. Therefore, it is not correct to believe that souls existed from eternity and then descended into bodies or moved between them.

2. Do Souls Wander After Death?

Orthodox teaching rejects the idea that the souls of the departed randomly wander through the world or move from one place to another without a purpose. Death does not mean that the soul has become aimless or without a destiny, but rather that it enters another state while awaiting the Resurrection and Judgment. Therefore, dreams, experiences, or personal observations should not be interpreted as evidence that the souls of the departed wander among the living.

3. Do Souls Enter Animals or Plants?

Orthodox teaching rejects the belief that after death a human soul can enter the body of an animal or a plant. Human beings have a distinct nature and identity within God’s purpose and do not become animals or plants after death. Such a belief also confuses the nature of humanity with that of other creatures and does not agree with faith in the Resurrection.

4. Rejection of the Doctrine of Reincarnation

The doctrine of reincarnation is based on the belief that a person lives more than one earthly life and, after death, moves into another body, which according to some beliefs may be human or animal. Christian Orthodox faith, however, is not based on repeated earthly lives, but on the Resurrection of the dead.

5. Resurrection Instead of Reincarnation

There is a fundamental difference between belief in the Resurrection and belief in reincarnation. In the Resurrection, the human being is raised by the work of God, whereas in reincarnation the soul is believed to move into another body to live a new life. Orthodox faith affirms that a person has one earthly life, followed by death, Resurrection, and Judgment, rather than a repeated series of incarnations.

6. The Spiritual Dimension and Orthodox Teaching

These teachings preserve the truth about the value of human life and the person’s responsibility before God. A person does not live the present life as merely one temporary stage in an endless series, but as a gift and responsibility before the Creator. Therefore, Christian teaching calls the person to repentance, faith, and preparation for eternity rather than relying on the idea of returning to another earthly life.

7. Pope Shenouda’s Objection to These Ideas

In presenting these matters, Pope Shenouda III objects to ideas that make the soul move between bodies, wander after death, or enter animals and plants, because they do not agree with Christian Orthodox faith. The Orthodox understanding emphasizes that the destiny of humanity is connected with the Resurrection and Judgment, not with reincarnation and repeated embodiment.

8. The Spiritual Conclusion

The central message is that the human soul is created by God, and that death does not mean that it moves into another body or transforms into another creature. Christian hope is not in repeated earthly lives, but in the Resurrection and eternal life with God. Therefore, faith in these truths should lead to a life of repentance and preparation, and to holding firmly to the Orthodox teaching received by the Church.
