Who do people say I am?
The lecture discusses the Person of the Lord Christ as He appeared to people through His words, teachings, miracles, and authority.
The Person of Christ was puzzling to many people because they saw in Him works, power, and teaching unlike anything they were accustomed to seeing in a human being.
Some said that He was John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or a great prophet, while the Apostle Peter declared that He was the Christ, the Son of the living God.
The lecture emphasizes that Christ was not merely a good teacher, but that His teaching was accompanied by authority, and His answers revealed the depth of wisdom and the divine mind.
His authority was also manifested in the miracles He performed, His healing of diseases, His raising of the dead, and His authority over nature and demons.
Spiritual Message
The lecture explains that Christ’s titles and the testimonies about Him lead to recognizing His identity as the only Son of God, not in the general sense of sonship that can be attributed to human beings, but as the only Son who is of the essence and nature of the Father.
The miracles demonstrate that Christ performed His works by His own authority, while He gave His disciples power to perform miracles in His name and by His power.
Christ is also presented in the lecture as the Lamb of God, the Redeemer, and the Savior who saves His people from their sins, and not merely from the problems of life.
Despite all this authority, Christ lived in complete humility and simplicity, and He did not use His power to frighten people or force faith upon them.
Therefore, truly knowing Christ is not based merely on being amazed by His power, but on believing in Him and knowing who He is.
Educational Lesson
The lecture teaches us that understanding Christ’s teaching requires looking at the depth of the commandment and not only at the letter and outward form.
This is shown in His discussion of the Sabbath, where He revealed that the purpose of the commandment is the spirit of goodness and good works, rather than merely holding to outward forms.
The lecture also explains that Christ answered people’s thoughts and intentions of their hearts, and not only the words they spoke.
His miracles and teachings provide multiple testimonies about His Person and authority, so much so that those who saw Him were astonished and wondered who He was.
At the same time, the opposition of the scribes and Pharisees reveals that seeing a miracle or hearing teaching does not necessarily mean accepting the truth, because a person may reject faith despite seeing the works of God.
Practical Spiritual Application
The believer should honestly ask himself: Who is Christ to me, and not merely what do people say about Him?
He should also receive Christ’s teaching in its depth and spirit, rather than reducing the spiritual life to outward forms or merely knowing the texts.
When a person faces opposition despite doing good, he should not consider opposition to be evidence that he is on the wrong path, because Christ Himself had opponents despite all the good and miracles He performed.
At the same time, Christ provides a model of humility, for although He possessed all this authority, He lived in complete simplicity without frightening people with His power.
The essential goal is to know Christ as the only Son of God, the Redeemer, and the Savior, and for our faith in Him to be founded on knowing His Person, His teaching, and His authority.
