Main Idea

Pope Shenouda III reflects on the character of King Saul and the character of the Prophet David, explaining the difference between a person who centers his life around himself and a person who puts God first in his life. Saul wanted to carry out his own will away from God’s guidance, relying on himself, his authority, and his kingdom until he stood in opposition to God’s will. David, however, was an example of a person who waits for the Lord and does not take revenge on himself, but leaves God to defend him and judge the matter.

Spiritual Message

The reflection emphasizes the importance of submitting to God’s will and not resisting His work in our lives. It also explains that loving oneself properly means drawing oneself closer to God and cleansing oneself from sins, rather than seeking to display oneself or fulfill personal desires. David is presented as an example of nobility, humility, and forgiveness, because he refused to harm Saul even though Saul was pursuing him, and he respected his position as the Lord’s anointed.

Educational Lesson

The reflection teaches us that trials and tribulations can be a means through which God trains His children and strengthens their faith, prayer, and patience, rather than being evidence that God has abandoned them. It also explains the difference between temporary emotional impact and true repentance; Saul was moved by David’s nobility, wept, and confessed his fault, but afterward returned to his former behavior, showing that emotion alone does not change a person’s nature.

Practical Application

A person should learn to wait for the Lord and not resort to human methods simply because he feels that God has delayed the solution. When suffering injustice, he should not make revenge his goal, but leave the matter to God while maintaining love and respect. He should also benefit from trials through prayer, faith, and patience, and turn every spiritual emotion into true repentance and lasting change in life. This is clearly shown in David, who not only refused to take revenge on Saul, but also showed concern and kindness toward his enemies after Saul’s death.
