“Present Your Bodies as a Living and Holy Sacrifice” – Romans 12:1

Pope Shenouda III reflects on St. Paul’s words: “I beseech you, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God.”

The first lesson is one of humility and respectful speech. Although St. Paul had apostolic authority, he did not speak arrogantly or issue commands. Instead, he said, “I beseech you, brethren.” This teaches Christians to speak to others with gentleness, respect, and dignity, without humiliating or hurting their feelings.

The sermon then explains what it means to offer the body as a living sacrifice. This does not mean destroying the body, but dedicating it to God and refusing to allow bodily desires and passions to control one’s life.

St. Paul teaches that those who live according to the flesh focus on the things of the flesh, while those who live according to the Spirit experience life and peace.

A living sacrifice is expressed through prayer, worship, spiritual discipline, self-control, resisting sinful desires, and accepting appropriate spiritual effort and sacrifice for God. The body should be brought under spiritual discipline rather than being given over to comfort and worldly pleasures.

The Christian body is not merely something for pleasure or outward appearance. It is consecrated to God and is called to become a holy vessel for His service. Therefore, every part of the person—eyes, ears, tongue, hands, and the whole body—should be dedicated to holiness.

The sermon points to the lives of martyrs, monks, ascetics, worshippers, and servants as examples of people who offered their bodies in service to God. Their sacrifices, endurance, prayer, fasting, and service became expressions of a living and holy offering.
