A Word About the Cross

Pope Shenouda III explains that the Cross is central to Christian faith and is not a symbol of shame or weakness, but a sign of Christ’s infinite love, sacrifice, humility, and redemption.

Christ willingly accepted the Cross and offered Himself for humanity. His death was according to His humanity, while His divinity never dies. The Cross therefore reveals several fundamental aspects of Christian faith: the Holy Trinity, the oneness of God, the Incarnation, redemption, and Christ’s humility.

The Cross is deeply present in the Christian’s daily life and in the Church’s sacraments. Christians make the sign of the Cross in prayer, at meals, before sleep, and in times of difficulty and danger. It is also used throughout the sacraments, liturgical prayers, blessings, and church ceremonies.

The sermon emphasizes that the power of the Cross is not merely in the external sign itself, but in faith in what the Cross represents: Christ’s love, sacrifice, and victory over sin.

Thus, the Cross is for Christians a blessing, a source of strength, a stronghold, and a reason for glory. It continually reminds us of Christ’s great love and His saving sacrifice.
