The Spiritual Media Series – Prayer
Prayer is one of the holiest spiritual means, and it is not merely words spoken to God, but a true relationship between the person and God, in which a person pours out feelings and emotions before Him.
Continuous prayer shows that God is present in a person’s life; therefore, the relationship with Him should be continual and not limited to specific times of the day.
The teaching emphasizes that growth in prayer takes place in terms of both length and depth, meaning increasing the time a person spends with God while also progressing in understanding the prayer, its spirit, and its feelings.
One practical exercise is to make God the first one a person speaks to at the beginning of the day, and to begin every work with prayer, asking for God’s help, protection, and blessing in everything one does.
Spiritual Message
Prayer should not be practiced merely as an obligation, but should gradually grow until it becomes an expression of mutual love between the person and God.
Prayer should include asking, thanksgiving, repentance, praise, glorification, and meditation on God’s attributes, as well as praying for others, the Church, the country, those in need, and everyone who needs God’s help.
Continuous prayer leads to purity of heart, increased faith, and a stronger relationship with God; it also helps a person control thoughts, words, and feelings and protects from judging others and anger.
Prayer also gives the soul peace and comfort because the person places matters in God’s hands, trusting that God works for good even when the answer does not come in the way the person expects.
Educational Lesson
The lesson teaches us that prayer can accompany a person everywhere and in every suitable activity, so that it becomes part of daily life rather than merely prayer at scheduled times.
For a person to grow in prayer, he needs to pray with understanding, recognizing the meaning of the words he says, and then pray with spirit, reverence, faith, and love for God.
It is also important for a person to practice memorized prayers, such as the Lord’s Prayer, the Psalms, and the Agpeya prayers, because they help him learn how to address God and how to pray properly.
The teaching emphasizes that a person’s faithfulness in the little he is able to offer in prayer opens the way for spiritual growth, and that God completes what is lacking through His grace.
Practical Application
A person can begin with a few minutes of prayer and gradually increase the time, without allowing busyness or laziness to prevent him from praying.
It is also helpful to begin every activity with a short prayer and to make free time an opportunity for prayer or spiritual thought so that the mind is not left to wrong thoughts.
A person should also pray in times of joy and times of distress, and in every circumstance of life, without making prayer something connected only with problems.
In this way, prayer becomes a way of life, and God becomes present in every step, so prayer leads to repentance, love, and spiritual growth, while the spiritual life in turn leads to prayer with greater warmth and depth.
