In baptism, He sanctifies the water and grants the person new birth and forgiveness of sins.
In the sacrament of Chrismation, the Holy Spirit dwells in the believer and establishes him in the new life.
In the sacrament of repentance and confession, He convicts the person of sin, leads him to repentance, and grants forgiveness through God’s work.
In the Eucharist, He completes the holy work in the divine sacrament.
In marriage, He unites the husband and wife and makes them one.
In the Anointing of the Sick, He grants healing and forgiveness.
In the priesthood, He grants authority and power for ministry and pastoral care.

The Work of the Holy Spirit in the Spiritual Life

The Holy Spirit is the source of repentance, holiness, and virtue, and He produces the fruits of the Spirit in the person such as love, joy, peace, patience, and the rest of the spiritual virtues.

Human Partnership with the Holy Spirit

Pope Shenouda III emphasizes that the Holy Spirit does not force a person to do good, but invites him to cooperate with Him in complete freedom. The person participates with God in spiritual work without participating in God’s essence or divinity.

Gifts and Ministry

All spiritual gifts, miracles, and ecclesiastical works are accomplished through the power of the Holy Spirit. Likewise, preaching, teaching, and successful ministry depend on His work and guidance.
