Spiritual and Educational Dimension
Long-suffering as a sign of spiritual life
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the spiritual person is characterized by long-suffering, meaning he does not despair quickly, nor gets angry quickly, but endures with a calm spirit, which indicates the work of the Holy Spirit in him.
The connection between long-suffering and love
Long-suffering is a practical expression of love, as the loving person bears others and is patient with them, just as a mother is patient with her child, waiting for his growth and correction.
God’s long-suffering with البشر
God Himself is long-suffering, being patient with sinners to lead them to repentance, as happened with many who transformed from a life of sin to holiness because of God’s patience with them.
The fruit of long-suffering in service
The servant needs long-suffering in dealing with those he serves, so he does not despair from their weakness, but remains patient until God works in them and they bear spiritual fruit.
Long-suffering in prayer
Prayer requires patience and continuity, and not getting bored when the response is delayed, because God works at the appropriate time according to His wisdom.
The spiritual results of long-suffering
Long-suffering leads to inner peace and gives the person spiritual stability and trust in God’s promises without disturbance or complaint.
The danger of lacking long-suffering
A person who lacks long-suffering tends to haste, anger, and reliance on human solutions, which distances him from God’s quiet work in his life.
God’s way of working
God works with calmness and gradual progression, not with haste, therefore He calls us to walk in the same spirit, waiting for the fulfillment of His purposes at the right time.
