Knowledge of Evil

Main Idea
The lecture discusses the concept of “knowledge of evil” from a spiritual perspective, explaining that the first fall of الإنسان came from seeking knowledge that was not meant for him. الإنسان was created to live in the knowledge of good only, but through knowing evil, suffering entered his life.
The Danger of Knowing Evil
His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that knowledge of evil is not مجرد awareness, but a gateway to inner suffering because it:
- Defiles the mind and disturbs the heart.
- Leads الإنسان to falling or temptation.
- Increases sorrow, as it is written: “He who increases knowledge increases grief.”
Sources of Evil Knowledge
The lecture points out several sources from which الإنسان receives this knowledge, including:
- Corrupt environment and bad companionship.
- Deviant reading and media.
- Internet, films, and impure content.
- Incorrect teaching or distorted religious ideas.
Impact of Wrong Knowledge
Knowledge of evil may lead to:
- Learning ways of sin, practicing it, and hiding it.
- Attraction to deceit, cheating, or hypocrisy.
- Being influenced by false ideas like magic and horoscopes.
- Losing purity of heart and simplicity of mind.
Two Types of Knowledge
The lecture distinguishes between:
- Knowledge that leads to falling: which attracts الإنسان to evil.
- Preventive knowledge: which reveals evil so we may beware without practicing it.
Spiritual Call
The main call is for الإنسان to seek only the knowledge that leads to salvation, and to return to childlike simplicity and purity of heart, avoiding all knowledge that does not benefit him spiritually.
