The Main Idea of the Parable

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III reflects on the parable of the rich man and Lazarus mentioned by the Lord Christ in the Gospel of Luke, explaining the deep spiritual message carried by this parable. Its purpose is not merely to talk about poverty and wealth, but to reveal the human attitude toward God and toward others, and how a person uses what God has given him in his life.

Wealth and Poverty as a Spiritual Test

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that the existence of the rich and the poor in the world is a kind of divine test. The rich person is tested in his mercy and compassion, and whether he uses what he has to serve others. The poor person is tested in his patience, contentment, and lack of complaining. Therefore wealth is not a sign of God’s approval, and poverty is not a sign of His anger.

The True Sin of the Rich Man

The sin of the rich man was not that he was rich, but that he lived for himself without mercy. He enjoyed luxury and comfort while the poor Lazarus was laid at his gate in a miserable condition, yet his heart did not move toward him. Thus the parable shows that neglect and failure to do good can be the reason for a person’s destruction.

The Importance of Mercy and Charity

The parable emphasizes that caring for the poor and the needy is an essential part of the spiritual life. God gave earthly goods not only for personal enjoyment but to be used to please God and make others happy. Mercy and giving are a path to gaining the Kingdom.

Life After Death

The parable explains that death is not the end of life but a transition to another life. After death the situations changed: Lazarus who suffered became comforted, while the rich man who lived in luxury became in torment. This shows that true life is measured by eternity, not by what happens in the present time.

No Repentance After Death

His Holiness Pope Shenouda III explains that repentance must take place in this life only, because the door closes after death. The rich man asked for mercy after his death, but his requests were not answered because the time of repentance and work had already ended.

The Lesson of Spiritual Memory

One of the deepest lessons in the parable is that a person after death remembers his entire life. This memory reveals all that he did in his life of actions and sins, and he sees his life completely before him. Therefore a person must live his life with spiritual vigilance and always prepare for eternity.

The Call to Prepare for Eternity

The parable calls every person to remember his sins in order to repent of them, remember the commandments of God in order to practice them, and remember the hour of death and judgment to prepare for it. The works that a person does on earth determine his eternal destiny and his degree in glory or torment.
